Kuumba Afrika traces its beginnings to 2009, when GTRD – a transportation and spatial planning research and development consulting firm that had, as one of its major offerings – Training and Capacity Building – was founded. In addition, over the last ten years, one of GTRD’s founders – Mac Mashiri – has been the Convener of the Capacity Building Session of the Southern African Transport Conference (SATC) – a premier transportation and development conference event that takes place once a year at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Tshwane, South Africa – where capacity challenges and their solutions were robustly debated. Through intensive engagements with various stakeholders, and the overwhelming realization of the magnitude of capacity gaps across the board, the Training and Capacity Building solution concept – formulated as one among a variety of interventions – metamorphosed into the Kuumba Afrika Training and Capacity Building institute in 2013.
At Kuumba Africa, we work from the premise that capacity building is a journey and not a destination. For that reason, we see our role as creating the space and opportunities to light the fire that inspires participants to unlock the door of personal excellence with a view to redefining their horizons and reaching their potential and thus ultimately contribute to transformative socio-economic development.
